Green Back Heron

2007 Winning Artist MaKayla Songer
Green Heron

MaKayla Songer has been the first place winner for three years running.

The Mountain Lake Migratory Bird Festival will be holding its forth annual weekend of birding May 16-18, 2008.  We’d like to thank the student’s and teachers of Giles County schools who helped, encouraged and participated in last years art contest and invite you again this year. The artwork was very impressive and a big hit for all who attended the event.

We are focusing our art this year on Virginia’s Migratory Birds. A list of the birds in this area which either were seen or can been seen is available as a download on this site. Please have your student’s choose a bird from that list.

This contest is open to all students in Giles County as well as home-schooled students, and we encourage you to participate. All artwork medium and style is up to the individual or teacher. Artwork will need to be signed by the artist and a label attached to the bottom or back of each piece. Please fill the labels out completely as this information will be used not only for judging but also for newspaper and web write-ups afterwards.

Contest judging will be held Saturday, May 17th before the banquet, which starts at 6:30 pm.
The two categories are:  Elementary and Junior High/High School.

Announcement of the art winners will be held Sunday, May 18 at 12:30 pm (immediately after the cookout) in the Activities Barn. All student’s and parents are invited and encouraged to attend.

Artwork must be completed and will be picked up at the School Board Office in Pearisburg, on May 15th. Please have all artwork separated by category. Artwork will be returned by May 23rd after photographs of the best pieces are taken.  They will be returned to the School Board Office.
